How do I qualify for the Honors Program?

First-year students enrolling at BCU need to have an ACT score of 26 or higher to qualify for the Honors Program. If you are a current BCU student or a transfer student, you need to complete 10 hours at BCU and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. If you meet these qualifications, complete an Honors Program Application Form and submit it to the Honors Program director.

Why should I join the Honors Program?
Benefits of being an active member of the Honors Program include opportunities to:

  • Take Honors-only courses offered each term

  • Work one-on-one with distinguished faculty members

  • Register early for classes (if you are taking an Honors course that term)

  • Serve on the Honors Executive Board

  • Travel internationally and domestically with other Honors students

  • Participate in Honors service projects that have a positive impact on our community, region, and world

  • Participate in special social events

  • Receive recognition on your transcript and at graduation for completing the Honors Program

What are Honors-only courses?
Honors-only courses are special courses offered each term to members of the Honors Program. Honors courses have a smaller class size compared to regular classes and are structured to specifically meet the needs of Honors students. Honors courses are not meant to be extremely difficult or lower your GPA. Instead, Honors courses are designed to provide Honors students with an opportunity to learn in a seminar style, participate in discussions and hands-on activities, and work one-on-one with faculty members. Many Honors courses meet the basic requirements for all academic majors.

How do I remain an active member of the Honors Program?
To remain an active member, you will need to do all of the following:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.33 or higher*

  • Participate in an Honors Program service project each year

  • Participate in a leadership role within Briar Cliff or your own community

  • Display a high level of character and act in accordance with the policies outlined in the Briar Cliff University Student Handbook

  • Complete Service and Leadership Forms by April 1 each year and return them to the Honors Program director

*If a student’s GPA falls below the designated cumulative GPA, he or she has two terms to pull the GPA up to remain in the Honors Program. During this probationary period, students will receive benefits of membership and are expected to uphold requirements in the areas of service, leadership, and character. To remain in the Program, Honors students may be on probation one time only.

How do I complete the Honors Program?
You must complete six Honors courses and meet the qualifications of an active Honors Program member.

What is the Honors Executive Board?
The Honors Executive Board is comprised of five active and elected members of the Honors Program. The purpose of the Honors Executive Board is to promote the Honors Program to incoming students, host social events for members, and create an Honors newsletter with updates and information for members.

Can I talk to Honors students about their experiences in the Program?
Yes! Simply contact the Honors Program director and he will help make all of the arrangements.
