Chemistry (B.S.)

Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree is designed for students who plan to enter industry or to pursue graduate study in chemistry. The B.S. option places a greater emphasis on mathematics and its scientific applications.

Upon graduating, students majoring in chemistry will have:

  • Developed a high level of problem solving ability, particularly with respect to laboratory problems
  • Prepared chemical solutions independently
  • Worked independently in lab
  • Observed and collected data
  • Possessed an extensive knowledge base in the areas of inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and biochemistry
  • Demonstrated an ability to communicate scientific information in a written format in a coherent fashion
  • Demonstrated an ability to present scientific information to a public
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the organization of scientific literature and ability to collect and organize such information
  • Possessed a historical appreciation for some of the major developments in the field
  • Conducted independent research under the mentorship of a faculty member and/or worked as an assistant in the preparation and delivery of courses in the chemistry laboratory
