Honors courses take a variety of forms and vary depending on the professor teaching the course.  Some honors courses are sections set aside by BCU’s academic departments and reserved for honors students only (or honors students and the department’s majors for some upper-level courses).  These sections differ from regular courses because they tend to be more discussion-oriented, and professors are encouraged to try creative new teaching strategies to actively engage the students with the course material.  Honors sections of courses are typically small; the largest have an enrollment of twenty, and many have ten to twelve students.

Courses designed specifically for the Honors Program take a couple of different forms, and honors students have a tremendous amount of influence on them.  HNRS 110: Readings for the Liberal Arts, for example, is a hybrid course that has both online and seminar components.  Students read five books over the summer, and the honors students get to choose two of the books.  Students participate in online discussions during the summer months and complete the course once they are on campus in the fall.  This course is an ideal way for incoming honors students to meet other students and start their college careers.

Another recent addition to our honors course offerings is HNRS 01M: Honors Seminar I, a one-hour course that meets once weekly during either the winter or spring term.  Honors students select the seminar’s topic during the fall term, and up to ten different Briar Cliff faculty members choose essential readings on the topic and take turns leading the seminar discussion each week.  The topic for Spring 2009 is “Issues of the 21st Century” and faculty from business administration, education, environmental science, music, nursing, political science, psychology, social work, and sociology will all select some of the readings and lead a discussion.  Our Vice President of Academic Affairs will even lead the seminar on one occasion!
